My first foray to the hills in the far north of Scotland and I was not to be disappointed. We picked a glorious weekend in early May. Ben Hope's claim to fame being that it's Scotlands (and the UKs!) most northerly munro.

Ben Hope can be climbed on the same day as Ben Klibreck, as there is only a 30 minute drive between the two hills. We made a full lazy weekend of it and climbed one on each day.

Lairg provided an appropriate base camp for our assault on these two hills, leaving only an hours drive to the start point for the walk.

  • The start point for this walk is opposite some farm buildings and is well signed.
Plenty off road parking is available adjacent to the starting point with room for at least a dozen cars.

  • From the car follow the obvious track and climb steeply along side several waterfalls on the lower flanks of the hill.

  • Once above the waterfalls the hillside becomes more open and heathery.
  • Continue on the track passing through patches of boggy ground heading for the break in the western cliff face. In low cloud on mist this break wouldn't be so obvious but the track has been well used and heads directly there.
  • Once above the cliff, GR 471483 the ground levels off slightly and the track turns almost due north before becoming steep again.
  • Follow a line of short squat cairns through the rocky ground. The summit view is always just over the next horizon. The triangulation point is located on the north edge of the summit plateau (927m, GR 477502).
  • To return we simply retraced our steps back to the start point.
